Skylarks over Daisy Hill

In the dark of night, a plane blazes against the sky. The only man who witnesses the fiery crash will be haunted by it for the rest of his life. It’s July 1944, and British forces are fighting in the skies over France. Skylarks Over Daisy Hill introduces us to the crew of one of the bombers flying these risky missions: the men are from all over the Commonwealth, but whether they’re from Cheshire or New Zealand, Yorkshire or Mauritius, they’re united in their love of flight and their commitment to defending freedom. Follow their story to its surprising – and deeply moving – end. Based on a true story, Skylarks Over Daisy Hill will have you laughing, crying, and calling up old friends to tell them how much you love them.

  • This book follows a crew of a Lancaster bomber through training and combat over Germany in WWII. The attention to detail makes it read as if it was written by an actual crew member. Clearly the author has put tremendous effort in to researching what it was like to be a bomber crew in the UK during the war, and puts you in the skies over Germany at night during raids prior to D Day. The characters of the crew, ranging from upper class Oxford grads to Yorkshire coal miner are skillfully drawn and the by play between the crew is artfully done. If you have any interest in what it was like in the night skies over Germany during the war this is a must read. It also does an excellent job of capturing the mood of the UK during the war years. - John Drews
